Trendy Boutique Hotel Makes its Debut in Riverside: The View From The Top

The Broadview Hotel is making its mark in the east end of Toronto. The old red brick building that was formerly Jilly’s is now a breath of fresh air for the Queen and Broadview corner which currently houses a gutted Dangerous Dan’s, vacant Irish pub and a convenience store.

The transformed and rejuvenated 58-room boutique hotel has opened their lounge and rooftop terrace to the masses... and I do mean masses. Be prepared to wait for a seat on the coveted rooftop patio bar – with lineups spanning down Broadview by 7pm, it is no easy feat to experience the ‘NO VACANCY’ neon sign in person.

The ‘NO VACANCY’ neon sign resides over a private event space on the rooftop terrace

Once you put your name on the waiting list, the lounge is a welcoming spot to have a glass of vino, or three, while you wait for your text from the hostess; A beautiful and bright space with a curved bar in the center of the room, you are greeted with textures of marble and copper, warm neon lights, and a mix of table and couch seating. The lounge is buzzing with socialites, Queen East locals, TV personalities and restaurateurs who are scoping out the newest ‘hot spot’.

When the golden elevator finally opened and we were escorted up to the 7th floor rooftop terrace that was bursting with upbeat excitement. The space is connected by a covered seating area with floor to ceiling windows and wrap around outdoor terrace seating with views spanning southeast and west. In the center of it all lies a narrow bar that offers both indoor and outdoor seating.

Although the cocktail list is still a work in progress the bartender reassured us that he could make anything we desired. The Aperol Negroni, Old Fashioned and Moscow Mule were all on point.

The rooftop dinner menu, although small is diverse. From fried smelts and scallop ceviche to jerk ribs and a classic burger. The beef tartar and fine herb fries were fan favourites and come highly recommended.

The beef tartar with potato crisps and celeriac remoulade $18 Still under construction is a street level restaurant that will look onto Queen and Broadview. This restaurant promises to offer a more fine dining experience.

Although it’s clear that The Broadview Hotel is still in their soft-opening phase, and some kinks will need to be ironed out in the coming weeks, the boutique hotel is sure to be a huge draw to out-of-towners as well as East and West-enders alike.
