Internationally Celebrated Carpet Designer Jan Kath Opens Toronto Showroom

May 24, 2018

German-born designer, and third generation carpet dealer, Jan Kath is anything but boring. His carpets are internationally known due to their unique pairing of traditional oriental technique and contemporary minimalist design features. With inspirations stemming from colourful cities and cultures all over the world, his beautifully crafted hand-knotted carpets tell a vibrant story.

The renowned designer is based out of Bochum but has showrooms and stores located in New York, Berlin, Munich, Hamburg, Cologne, Stuttgart, Vancouver, and now, Toronto. Earlier this month Jan Kath opened the doors to a showroom located at 190 McCaul Street, beautifully adorned with carpets from his many collections.

Jan Kath is known for changing the way people think about carpets, stating “you can be cool while still keeping your feet warm!” Many of his carpets are custom made, while others can be pieced together like modules.  He has even expanded, designing signature furniture pieces.  More than 1,500 carpet weavers are bringing his visions to life worldwide. The use of traditional (and very time consuming) carpet weaving techniques and quality fabrics is part of Jan Kath’s DNA.  It would take four weavers approximately three months to create a custom-made 2.5 x 3-meter carpet.

All of his collections tell a different story that evokes emotion while transporting you to another place and time.  The Spacecraft collection captures the depth of distant galaxies while his Jungle collection will take you on a journey both above and below lush green trees, using delicate Chinese silk and tough nettle fibers from the Asian mountains. With Love From Russia tells the history of Russia’s culture, inspired by headscarves that are still worn in rural areas. This collection is full of floral designs with vivid pink and red hues. His collection Sliced replicates the design features inside precious and semiprecious stones. The way he captures the colour, dimensions and shapes are miraculous.

Often displayed in exhibits in art and design museums in Europe, Jan Kath is recognized for his style-defining carpets. He has won several awards including the Carpet Design Award, Red Dot, Wallpaper Design Awards, iF Design Award and many more. His designs have been considered ‘haute couture’ for the floor – too beautiful to walk over. The designer also uses his platform to express, ‘Make Carpets, Not War’, a phrase that he has incorporated into his work and showrooms. Sustainability, and fairtrade, social responsibility and creating prospects are fundamental in the manufacturing of Jan Kath’s designs.

Jan Kath has even designed an app that allows you to see how the designer’s carpets will look in your space before you buy. With the intention of inspiring you to take interior design into your own hands, just upload a photo of your room and then insert carpets to see which you like best.

The Toronto showroom is open from Monday – Friday 10:00 am to 6:00 pm and on Saturday by appointment only. Check out their website here
